DHS Accepting Comments from the Public on the HSRA

Legal Clinic Honors Volunteers at Reception
Fifty volunteers, site staff, board members, staff and friends of WLCH gathered together on the evening of Nov. 1st at Crowell and Moring to celebrate our work and honor and appreciate the irreplaceable dedication and commitment of our volunteers. We are in deepest gratitude to each and every one of you.
Several firms were awarded for their work with the gift of paintings created by artists in the Miriams Kitchen After-Breakfast-Program. One of the firms honored received artwork that was painted by a client who they had met and represented through Legal Clinic Intake at Miriams Kitchen! A touching and beautiful evening all around.

Youth Advocacy Day '07
On October 20th, the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, in conjunction with the Fair Budget Coalition and a number of other youth advocacy organizations in the DC Metro Area, co-sponsored "Youth Advocacy Day 07", a day long workshop for youth in the Washington, DC area, held at Covenant House on Mississippi Avenue in Southeast, DC.
Approximately 60 people participated in "Youth Advocacy Day" ranging from the ages of 14-24. The event was co-sponsored with a number of local organizations including: Covenant House DC, DC Alliance of Youth Advocates, Lifepieces to Masterpieces, Metro Teen AIDS, Sasha Bruce Youthwork, Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, Youth Action Research Group, and the Youth Education Alliance.
The workshop included a number of components highlighted by a budget advocacy workshop, a session on how to persuade public officials through gathering testimony and letter writing campaigns, and a session on how to appropriately handle police brutality. There was also a workshop that showed participants how to use art as a tool for leadership and self-exploration. A number of key-note speakers attended the workshop in hopes of inspiring those who attended by letting them know their voices can make a difference in the DC community.
For more information about Youth Advocacy Day 07, contact Kristi Matthews, Grass Roots Advocacy Coordinator for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless and Fair Budget Coalition at kristi@legalclinic.org.
